2018-2019 Season Update

2018-2019 was a great year for club lax, with over 50 active members for the spring season despite a large percentage of our juniors spending the spring semester abroad. The teams were split once again, with co-presidents Michael McFarland and Andrew Weigman captaining the ND Gold team. Kevin Sohr and Andrew Abbattista, who were high school linemates, led the ND Blue team together. Every scrimmage between the two teams was extremely competitive, and truly showcased the high level of skill that our program has. While there was some discussion to join a national league in addition to our current league, funding and university restrictions prevented us from joining for the 2019 Spring season.

To shake off the rust, we hosted a fall tournament with games against Michigan and DePaul.  Weekly scrimmages paid off for the ND Gold squad led by McFarland and Weigman as they trounced DePaul 11-6 in a highly psychical contest. Having long, smart offensive possessions was the major key in the victory. ND Gold followed up the victory against DePaul with a 7-6 victory against the Michigan Wolverines.  ND Blue struggled to find their offense against Michigan, with many costly turnovers coming in unsettled play. The boys turned it around in the second game, playing much better in a tie against DePaul.  High tempo practices continued into the winter months before moving inside to Loftus due to the snow.

Unlike last season, the team was unable to travel to the Midwestern Invitational Lacrosse Festival in Columbus as it fell conveniently on April 20th, part of Easter weekend. Instead, the season opened with a day tournament at Michigan. ND Blue won both games, defeating MSU 6-5 and Michigan 8-4. Junior attackman Nick Lucci had 4 goals and 5 assists on the day. Goalie Will Andrews came up clutch at the end of both games to seal the victory. ND Gold defeated MSU 6-2 and tied Michigan 3-3. Noah Martin and Shane Johnson played well throughout both games.

One week later, the teams hosted games against local rival Holy Cross and Mankato State University. Despite the chilly weather, both teams played well and ended up 2-0 on the day. Senior Lukas Cepkauskas led both teams in scoring with a 3 goal and 1 assist performance against Mankato. Following the games, our teams celebrated the victories with a post-win meal at Kevin Sohr and Lukas's house.

In early April, the teams traveled to Northern Illinois University for games against DePaul and Marquette. Both teams were slated to play against Northwestern but they unfortunately did not show up. In their game against DePaul, ND Blue only suited up 13 players. Despite the low subs, the team played a smart, low-tempo game that enabled them to work their matchups and take high percentage shots. Strong performances were turned in by Luke McMahon, John Hlavin, and Greg Bullen in the 5-3 win. ND Gold, also playing with low numbers, defeated Marquette 6-3.

Championship Weekend: Madison, WI

The teams traveled to Madison for the championship weekend in April. Temperatures hovered in the 40s the entire weekend, making it the coldest championship weekend in recent history. In the opening game, ND Gold came out firing against Iowa, winning the game 11-6. Due to some unfortunate seeding, the undefeated ND Blue squad had to play Northwestern in the opening round. Northwestern executed well from behind using a two-man game. Kevin Sohr and Conor McDonough led the way for the team on offense each scoring two goals each. Northwestern scored with 20 seconds to go and held on to their lead to win the game 5-4, putting the top-seeded ND Blue into the losers bracket.

Northwestern followed up their strong performance with a 7-2 win against ND Gold. Captains Michael McFarland and Andrew Weigman each had a goal in the defeat. Despite the loss to Northwestern, ND Blue dug in for their game against Iowa. Nick Lucci dominated from attack with a 5 goal affair. Tyler Dann also scored his first collegiate goal!

The following day, with a combined team, ND Blue and ND Gold defeated DePaul 7-2 to take 3rd and 5th place in the league for the 2018-2019 season.

2017-2018 Season Update

Another great year of lacrosse in the books for ND Club Lacrosse.  ND Blue was captained by Austin Matheny and Dan Delfico, while ND Gold was led by Kevin Sohr and Martin Buckley. In our fall tournament at Madison we went 3-0 with wins against Western Michigan, Marquette, and the University of Wisconsin. Reed Gregory and Kevin Sohr played well in goal while Luke Reilly fueled the offense in the championship against Wisconsin.

After our fall tournament, we practiced once a week into the spring. Cold weather forced a few cancellations as the spring weather did not really show until April. We began our spring season at Ohio State for the second annual Midwestern Invitational Lacrosse Festival.  ND Blue, led by Ben Shepard, went 3-0 with wins against Kent State, Miami, and Cincinnati.  ND Gold started off strong with a win against Cincinnati but struggled against Miami, losing 6-1. Team captain Kevin Sohr suffered his first collegiate loss against Miami, which led to a dominant 5 goal, 1 assist performance against Ohio State.

Later in March we traveled with just one team to Ann Arbor for a day trip at the University of Michigan. In our first game against the University of Ohio Bobcats we mounted an impressive comeback in the second half but unfortunately fell short, losing 8-7. John Hlavin, Conor McDonough, and Reed Gregory all played especially well. We regained composure in the second half, settled the ball better, and defeated Michigan 6-4.

Due to forecasted thunderstorms we were forced to cancel our home tournament. The weather turned out to be better than expected so we were able to salvage an intersquad scrimmage for the parents who traveled to see us play. ND Blue dominated possession in the first half but ND Gold was able to hang in the game. Gold mounted a comeback in the second half and took advantage of a new defensive set Blue was running. ND Gold earned temporary bragging rights with their 8-7 victory.

Championship Weekend: Madison, WI

Just like last year, we traveled to Madison for our championship weekend with only a few subs for either team, and only one goalie. Due to some unfortunate seeding, we were force to play one another in the semifinals. Junior defenseman Hank Assaf volunteered to play a half in goal for each team.  ND Gold was unable to take advantage of this in the first half and fell to ND Blue 7-4.

In the Bronze Medal game, ND Gold defeated Northwestern 9-2. This was arguably the best performance of the season. The defense was dominant, led by Jack Toomey, Hank Assaf, and Ben Merrick. Our offense forced multiple turnovers on rides, leading to easy doorstep goals.

In the championship game, ND Blue defeated Wisconsin 9-6. This was our tihrd championship in a row and fourth in five years. Tournament MVP Reed Gregory had six goals with Matt Hardiman, Ben Shepard, and Michael McFarland adding a goal each. Goalie Shane Johnson made a few incredible stops in the championship game, preventing Wisconsin from gaining any significant momentum.

2016-2017 Season Update

Co-Presidents: Christian Wood & Austin Matheny

2016-2017 was a great year for ND Club Lacrosse. With Austin and Christian at the helm we played the most competitve schedule to date.  In our home fall tournament we went 2-0 with wins against Dayton and Western Michigan.  Thunderstorms forced us to cancel the final game against Purdue.  Overall it was a great display that we could compete and win against MCLA teams.

Following our fall tournament, we continued to practice once a week until March.  We began our season with a tournament at Ohio State.  ND Blue defeated Kentucky handily but lost to Ohio State A in the semifinals.  ND Blue, led by co-presidents Austin and Christian, defeated Ohio State B to take 3rd place in the tournament. ND Gold defeated Louisville, Ohio State B, and Ohio State A to win the Midwestern Invitational Lacrosse Fesitval.  Captains Jack Assaf and Kevin Sohr led the team, with strong performances also turned in by goalie Shane Johnson, Martin Buckley, and Ryan Onderdonk.

We then traveled to Northwestern the following weekend.  We had strong wins against Michigan, Michigan State, and others.  Huge shoutout to Mr. and Mrs. McFarland for having the team over after the game for some post-win sandwiches and snacks.  At our home tournament, ND Gold defeated ND Blue in a scrimmage. Both teams defeated the University of Wisconsin.  Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Sohr for feeding the teams between games.

Championship weekend: Madison, WI

We traveled to Madison, WI for our championship weekend with only a few subs for either team. Despite our low numbers, ND Gold and ND Blue advanced to the semifinals where unfortunately, they had to play each other.  ND Blue mounted a huge second half comeback to force OT. Goalie Shane Johnson led the way for ND Gold making a save that led to transition through Jack Toomey and Kevin Sohr.  Tyler Williams sealed the deal with a righty alley dodge and a shot that pinned the top left corner.

ND Blue defeated Winona State for third place in the GLLL. With the support of ND Blue on the sideline, ND Gold defeated Wisconsin 8-7 to win the 2017 GLLL championship.  Freshmen Ben Shephard dominated the tournament with a pair of goals in the championship.

Regular Season Wrapped Up Right

Posted on April 14, 2014

We finished our season at home on Sunday, and although Michigan State backed out for fear of predicted thunderstorms we were able to keep our game against Loyola Chicago. We came away with our seventh win to close out the season, and we will enter the championship tournament in Madison in two weeks at the top of the league.

Defeated Loyola Chicago 13-3

ROAD WINS AT NIU

Posted on April 7, 2014

After a full day of travel and lacrosse on Saturday, our team has come away with another three wins! We are now at the top of the GLLL as one of only a few undefeated teams, and our rivals Marquette and UW-Madison Red each have one loss.

Defeated Northwestern University  10-5

Defeated Holy Cross College  9-0

Defeated Northern Illinois University  11-0

STRONG START

Posted on March 30, 2014

We managed to sweep our first weekend of games on a cold Saturday in South Bend, putting us in a great position going forward.

Our first win against Marquette, likely our biggest challenge of the season, came after a critical two goal comeback in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter. This effort put us into overtime, where a sloppy pass on the part of Marquette gave us a fast break opportunity that resulted in the winning goal.

Marquette game: 5-4 OT win

Our wins against Michigan State and School Craft were more decisive:

MSU game: 12-3 win

School Craft game: 11-4 win

Relay Results

Posted on March 30, 2014

Notre Dame Relay for Life raised $180,440.83 for the American Cancer Society, while also celebrating the lives and honoring the struggle of so many people who have faced cancer.

Our team was proud to be even more involved in Relay this year, with nine players volunteering to help set up luminaries and monitor the kids’ bounce activities.

We also had 17 players register for our team and raise $1,255, which is the 21st most out of 85 teams. Special thanks to Augie O’Hern for absolutely crushing the fundraising.

We plan to continue working with ND Relay for Life and to be more involved each year.

Game Changed

Posted on March 27, 2014

This GLLL weekend at Holy Cross has undergone some changes. Games will now be played at Kroc field in South Bend (Turf!) and we’ve added a third game to help make up for the three lost from last weekend’s cancellations.

Our Saturday game schedule is as follows:

12:15 PM    MARQUETTE – NOTRE DAME

4: 00 PM   MICHIGAN STATE (R) – NOTRE DAME

5:15 PM    SCHOOL CRAFT – NOTRE DAME

First Weekend Cancelled

Posted on March 24, 2014

Our first weekend of games, which we were to host, was cancelled due to field conditions. We are working on setting up rematches with the three teams on other weekends.

Our games at Holy Cross next weekend are still on for now. Let’s get ready to start strong!

Ann Arbor Annihilation

Posted on November 18, 2013

On Saturday we wrapped up the semester by travelling to Ann Arbor to scrimmage the University of Michigan, a GLLL division rival, and Ohio State University, an NCLL team.

We started strong against Michigan in the first half and held out against a second half rally. We won the scrimmage by one goal in the end, and it would have been more without all those pipes (Were those goals even regulation?).

The Ohio State game took the opposite course as we fell behind initially, but came back strong in the second half to win decisively by four goals.

Now we know what to work on when things start up again next semester, and we can be confident that we will be a GLLL powerhouse once again. And even more importantly, we looked damn good in our new Adidas swag.

P.S.
Big thanks to Tyler’s mom for some delicious apples and donuts

First Fall Ball Scrimmage

Posted on November 1, 2013

Our first ever fall break scrimmage was, after a confusing start, a success. We played Holy Cross at Arlotta Stadium and showed why we are one of the best teams in the GLLL.

We will have a chance to scrimmage some more teams when we travel to Michigan on Nov. 16.

Practice Times Set

Posted on September 23, 2013

Our practice slot for the remainder of the semester will be Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:45 PM on the McGlinn Practice fields (adjacent to the bookstore basketball courts).

This week’s practices on 9/24 and 9/26 will be open practices to get everyone ready. The following week we will hold try-outs. The week after that will be our first practices with our set team roster for the year ahead.

See you Tuesday!

Meeting Moved to Wednesday

Posted on September 17, 2013

We somehow lost our reservation in LaFortune, even after it was confirmed, so we are now going to combine our first meeting and first practice.

We will meet Wednesday at 4:45 PM on the McGlinn practice fields (behind McGlinn and next to bookstore courts), which have now been lined for lacrosse. BTW, 4:45 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays will be our regular practice slot this fall.

We will start with introductions, basic information and answering your questions, and then we’ll toss the ball around a bit at the end.

See you Wednesday!

First Meeting of the Year

Posted on September 13, 2013

We’re having a first meeting for just the second time ever. It should be a good one.

Our intro meeting will be at 7:30 PM on Tuesday (Sept. 17) in the Montgomery Room of LaFortune (across from Starbucks).

For the new guys we will have officer introductions and an overview of what a year of ND Club Lacrosse looks like.

For everyone we will be discussing team dues, practice schedule, fall ball, SAO and Rec Sports requirements for participation, apparel, community service, and expectations for the year ahead.

Email cstacy2@nd.edu if you CANNOT attend.

Activities Night 2.0

Posted on September 4, 2013

We had a successful showing at our second activities night, with approximately 45 new faces looking to join the team.

Be on the lookout for updates about our upcoming first meeting of the year and try-outs. Also, get excited about another year of ND club lacrosse!

First Year, Second Place

Posted on April 30, 2013

The championship loss was disappointing, but we played some great lacrosse over the weekend and came away with some hardware in our first year as a club.

Quarterfinals – 12 to 3 over Mad Cow

Semifinals – 13 to 0 over Northwestern

Championship Game – 5 to 8 loss to Wisconsin

The seniors put it all out there on the field and, although it’s a shame we couldn’t get them the title, they’ll be on to bigger and better things. As for the rest of us, we can go for it all again in 2014!

'Ship

Posted on April 22, 2013

We’re headed to Madison this weekend and the stage is set for us to take it all. We’re the 3 seed, but we know we’ll be the best team there if we bring our A-games. The bracket is clearly begging for a rematch between us and Madison Red in the championship game.

Let’s work hard this week and then tear it up on Saturday and Sunday! Let’s win the ‘ship!

Bittersweet

Posted on April 21, 2013

Our first real away games brought a mixed result.

We beat Northwestern 4-3 despite a slow start, but we came up just short against UW Madison Red with an 8-7 OT loss.

On the upside, we only dropped to No.2 in the all-important power rankings and are still on top of our division. So, we’re headed to Madison and we’ll probably get another shot at Wisconsin Red. Let’s make it count!

Stickers

Posted on April 20, 2013

Make sure to throw those sweet new helmet stickers on your lid before our games on Saturday. We gotta look good to play good. See you bright and early at Library Circle!

Relay

Posted on April 13, 2013

The 2013 ND Relay for Life was a success and our participation was definitely a part of that.

Thank you to all the guys who donated and to friends and family who donated! Thank you to all the guys who participated in the Relay itself!

It’s great to know our club can help others and do more than just organize lacrosse games for ourselves.

Next year we hope to become even more involved in this meaningful event — we can always bring a few more guys and raise a bit more money. But until then, let’s get back to lacrosse.

Cancelled

Posted on April 13, 2013

Our trip to Michigan State University was cancelled after the Spartans informed us they were no longer able to provide a field. We were hoping to still play Holy Cross, but those plans also fell apart due to an inability to secure referees.

We are going to work with the GLLL in an effort to reschedule the games, but for now our next two games will be on the 20th at Northwestern — we will play Northwestern and UW Madison Red.

Rest up this weekend, we have a lot of lacrosse left to play.

Domination

Posted on April 12, 2013

We took the Holy Cross weekend by storm and racked up three more wins! Everyone had solid performances both Saturday and Sunday, but especially Tom Spoonmore. His family was in town, so he decided to give them a show with 5 goals on the weekend.

Final Tallies:

Defeated UW Madison White 15-3

Defeated Michigan 5-3

Defeated School Craft 12-3

We are 4-0 halfway through the season and more importantly #1 on LaxPower!

New Officers

Posted on April 2, 2013

Congratulations to our newly selected Treasurer and Safety Officer for 2013-2014!

Sophomore Andrew Winterstein (#4) will take over Tim Ryan’s position as Club Treasurer and Freshman Joe Shamon (#31) will take over Andy Doyne’s position as Club Safety Officer for next year.

They’ll join our returning officers as we keep everything running smoothly and build for the future.

Successful Weekend

Posted on March 24, 2013

Here are the results of the first GLLL weekend at Notre Dame:

(5-2)   MICHIGA –  HOLY CROSS

Now we have a win under our belts heading into our two games at Holy Cross on April 6!

We hope our family and friends enjoyed the game, and we hope the other teams had a good time coming out to campus. Let’s keep going strong!

Welcome back from Spring Break! Get ready for some real lacrosse this weekend.

To prepare for Saturday’s season-opener (get pumped), we are going to try and find time for practices this week.

Weather permitting, we will have two practices at the Riehle fields by the Stepan Center (where we practiced in the fall) on Tuesday and Thursday each from 4:45 – 6:45 PM.

We are also looking into the possibility of a Friday practice or night practice in Loftus, look for an email about that possibility sometime soon.

ND Lacrosse is forming

Posted on March 27, 2012

Notre Dame freshman and Club President, Connor Stacy, has submitted the paperwork for the formation of a Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse Club on campus. Kevin Dugan, a former college lacrosse coach and former Notre Dame midfielder, will coach the team and advise the club. Coach Dugan works in the Athletics Department as Manager of Youth and Community Programs.

While the team will not become an official club until late April, Coach Dugan has offered to organize some meetings and practices for those interested in joining the club. The plan is to organize practices and maybe one scrimmage this spring and then hit the ground running as a fully operational club next fall – Uniforms, custom gear, practices, games, etc.

The team will compete in the Great Lakes Lacrosse League against teams from Michigan, Michigan State, Holy Cross College and other nearby schools. The team will play an eight game schedule, followed by tournament-style league play-offs, beginning in spring of 2013. However, the team will also have fall ball practices and some scrimmages in the fall of 2012. You can visit http://www.greatlakeslax.org/ for more information about the league we will be joining.
